Benning, Henry Lewis was born on April 2, 1814 in Columbia County, Georgia, United States. Son of Pleasant Moon and Matilda (White) Benning.

Education

Graduate Franklin College (now U. Georgia), 1834.

Career

Admitted to Georgia bar, 1835, practiced law, Columbus, Georgia, 1835-1875. Member Georgia General Assembly. Secessionist delegate to Nashville Conference of 1850 which met to consider federal legislation on expansion of slavery.

The American Association For Justice Georgia Supreme Court, 1853-1859. Delegate National Democratic Convention, Charleston, South Carolina., 1860. Vice president National Democratic Convention, Baltimore, 1860.

Delegate Georgia Secession Convention, 1861. Georgia commissioner to Virginia convention to consider Ordinance of Secession, 1861. Served as brigadier general Confederate Army, participated in battles of Sharpsburg, Antietam, Chickamauga, Gettysburg, The Wilderness.
