Hattaway was born on December 26, 1938 in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States; the son of Samuel Morell Hattaway and Mary Amelia (Cook) Hattaway.
Hattaway received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Louisiana State University in 1961. Two years later he earned his Master of Arts degree and a Ph.D. in 1969 from the same university.
Hattaway served in the United States Army from 1963 to 1965. In 1969, he was appointed a professor of history at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, where he worked until his retirement as a professor emeritus of history and religion studies. Later Herman was also appointed as an assistant priest at St. James and a teacheк of Adult Christian Education.

On August 19, 1961 Herman Hattaway married Margaret Anne Hattaway.
