Chancellor 6th Division, Tennessee, 1875-1878. Justice Supreme Court of the Tennessee, 1886-1893 (chief justice, January-April 1893). United States circuit judge, 6th Judicial Circuit, 1893-1910.

Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, January 3, since 1910. Professor constitutional law, 1898-1910, and dean law department, 1905-1910, Vanderbilt University Home: Nashville, Tenn.
