Ian Carruthers McCuaig was born on March 5, 1962, in Orillia, Ontario, Canada. He is the son of Alan Hayes and Elizabeth Louise (Bonnell) McCuaig.
Ian McCuaig was a student of the Royal Conservatory of Music, Toronto, Ontario, and graduated in 1983. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations at the University of Toronto in 1990. He has also a Master of Arts degree from the University of San Francisco.
Before moving to the United States, Ian McCuaig worked as a development consultant at the United Nations Association in Toronto from 1988 till 1989. During the next three years, he took the position of an account executive at The Goldie Limited. In 1992 he came to the United States and took up the consultant post at Marts & Lundy, Inc. in San Francisco. From 1996 till 2000 Ian was a senior director at SF Goodwill. In 2000 he became a fundraising consultant at IM Fundraising Partners. He was also the development director at On Lok Lifeways from 2008 till 2015.
McCuaig also had some freelance jobs, including the job at Development Executives Roundtable, where he persuaded Board to invest in organizational excellence and built durable infrastructure. He also worked at the Association of Fundraising Professionals of Golden Gate Chapter and on Human Rights Now! Campaign at Amnesty International Canada. From 2019 he is a program coordinator at the International Relations Forum of The Commonwealth Club of California as well.
Ian McCuaig married Sarah Elizabeth Robertson on July 2, 1994.
