Ian Walter Boothroyd Thornton was born on July 14, 1926 in Halifax, United Kingdom. He was a son of John Thornton and Alice Mary (Crabtree) Thornton.
Ian Thornton received his Bachelor of Science (with honors) from Leeds University in 1951. He also earned his Doctor of Philosophy in 1953 and Doctor of Science in 1984.
Ian Thornton served for the British Army as a parachutist during 1944-1947 and became lieutenant.
Thornton began his academic career as a lecturer in zoology at Gordon Memorial College in Khartoum, Sudan from 1953 to 1956. He then became a senior lecturer at the University of Hong Kong in Hong Kong in 1956-1963. Thornton also was a reader in zoology during 1963-1967 and dean of Faculty of Science in 1960-1963 there.
In 1963 Thornton was a visiting senior scholar of the East-West Center of the University of Hawaii.
From 1968 to 1992 he was a professor of zoology at La Trobe University in Bundoora, Australia, and in 1992 he became professor emeritus. Besides, he also served there as dean of School of Biological Sciences during 1970-1972, 1979-1981, and 1985-1987.
Ian Thornton died on October 1, 2002.
