Ross began his career as an editor of Threshold Magazine in 1941 and had held the position for two years. In 1953, he became a staff writer for New York Post, where he worked until 1961. Also Irwin served as a roving editor of Reader's Digest from 1982 to 1985. From 1985 he was a staff writer for that magazine.
