James Casabere
James Casebere was born on September 17, 1953 in Lansing, Michigan, United States. He is a son of James Louis Casebere and Katherine Ann (Young) Kudreiko.
James Casebere spent his childhood and youth in Detroit, Michigan. From 1971 to 1973, he attended Michigan State University. Three years later, he obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design.
In 1977, Casebere joined the Whitney Independent Study Program. After, he took some art lessons from John Baldessari and Doug Huebler in Los Angeles. In 1979, he earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from the California Institute of the Arts.
James Casebere emerged to the art scene in the early 1980s. His art of the period was represented by "Pictures Generation" of "post-modern" typical for the time. Since then, he has produced a series of photos that depicted complex tabletop models built in his studio. His first large-scale installation, 'Sonsbeek', was presented for the first time in 1986 in Arnhem, Holland.
From 1985 to 1988, Casebere served as a professor at Rockland Community College, Suffern, New York. In the subsequent years, he has also taught or has been a visiting artist at the California Institute of the Arts, Rhode Island School of Design, Harvard and Yale Universities, and Cooper Union.
The main subjects of his early sculptural compositions included American suburban homes, mythical American West, and the cultural institutions of the Enlightenment. At the beginning of the 1990s, Casebere produced a series of flooded images. Later, he has also made reference to some representatives of modern architecture, like Victor Horta and Richard Neutra.
The September 11 attacks turned Casebere to the aesthetics of the Eastern Mediterranean. The 10th century Andalusia, several historical and now-present countries and cities of the area, like an Egyptian Luxor, and Mimar Sinan's architecture were among the sources of his inspiration at the time.
During the course of his career, James Casebere has shown worldwide, including such major museums as the Museum of Modern Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York City, the Tate Gallery, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and many others. He has exhibited in Canada, Spain, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland as well.
In 2016, the Haus der Kunst in Munich, Germany organized a major retrospective of his works.
Nowadays, the artist shares his time between New York City and Canaan.
