Roth received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry from the University of West Virginia in 1947. Four years later he earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree in Physical Chemistry from the University of Maryland.
Roth served in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1946. He began his career as a research chemist at Franklin Institute in 1951. Two years later James became a chief chemist at Lehigh Paints & Chemicals Company. Then in 1955, he was appointed a research chemist at Global Assessment of Functioning Corporation. In 1958, he held a position of a manager of chemistry laboratory at Franklin Institute.
In addition, Roth served as a chemist at Monsanto Company from 1960 to 1980. Also in 1973, he became a director of catalysis research at the same company. Four years later James worked as a director of process science research at Monsanto Company. Then in 1980, he was appointed a chief scientist at Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. Since 1991 Roth has been an industrial consultant at that company.
Roth is a member of National Academy of Engineering, American Chemical Society, Catalysis Society of North America and Catalysis Club of Philadelphia.
On June 20, 1969 James Roth married Sharon E. Mattes. He has three children.
