Jamie Lee Curtis is an American actress, author, and activist. Her debut film Halloween where she essayed the role of Laurie Strode was a hit and establishing her as a noted actress in the horror genre. Eventually, her remarkable performance in the film landed her other films in the genre including Terror Train, The Fog, and Halloween II. Curtis has bagged several awards including the BAFTA Award, Golden Globe Award, and Saturn Award.
Background
Ethnicity:
Jamie Lee Curtis’s father was Jewish, and was the son of Jewish emigrants from Hungary and Slovakia. Jamie Lee’s mother was of English, Scots-Irish/Northern Irish, German, Swiss-German, and remote French, ancestry on her own father’s side of the family, and of Danish ancestry on her own mother’s side of the family.
Jamie Lee Curtis was born on November 22, 1958, in Santa Monica, California, the United States. Her parents, Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh were very well known Hollywood performers. Tony was a film actor that spanned 6 decades, starring in classics such as Some Like It Hot and Spartacus. Janet was a film actress and starred in Psycho, which won her the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress.
Jamie has an older sister, Kelly Curtis, who is also an actress. Their parents divorced in 1962. They also have several half-siblings, all from their father's remarriages.
Education
Jamie Lee Curtis was introduced to show business at an early age, although she didn't immediately decide to become an actress. She was a cheerleader at the all-girls Westlake School in Los Angeles and the Beverly Hills High School, before eventually graduating in 1976 from Choate Rosemary Hall, a boarding school in Connecticut.
Curtis then joined the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California, to study law. Her original intention was not to get into acting at all but to become a social worker. She decided after a single semester that she wasn’t into it, and started pursuing acting.
Curtis initially landed spots on such shows as Quincy M.E. and Columbo. In 1978, she essayed Lt. Barbara Duran, a nurse in 23 episodes of military comedy Operation Petticoat based on a 1959 movie that featured his father Tony Curtis. The same year she made her debut with the classic horror film Halloween which went on to become a major hit and deemed to have garnered maximum profit as an independent film during that period.
Her portrayal of Laurie Strode in Halloween earned her accolades and fetched her several other horror films for the next couple of years. Curtis appeared in Prom Night (1980), The Fog (1980), and Halloween II (1981), and these appearances resulted in the actress becoming known as the "Scream Queen."
On the small screen, Curtis showed her dramatic talents in Death of a Centerfold: The Dorothy Stratten Story (1981). She played the title character, a Playboy model, who died at the hands of her abusive and controlling husband. Curtis also displayed her comic chops in the 1983 hit film Trading Places with Dan Aykroyd and Eddie Murphy. Her portrayal of a soft-hearted hooker helped take her career to a new level.
She was successful in shedding off her horror starlet image and embarked on different projects that got her mixed reviews. She starred in Love Letters, The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension, and Grandview, U.S.A. in 1984. In 1985, she starred in Perfect opposite John Travolta. Her movies A Man in Love, and Amazing Grace and Chuck were released in 1987 and Dominick and Eugene in 1988.
Curtis enjoyed another wave of success in the late 1980s, starting with the acclaimed comedy A Fish Called Wanda (1988). She headlined the sitcom Anything But Love with comedian Richard Lewis from 1989 to 1992, earning a Golden Globe Award for her work in 1990. Curtis then showed another side of her acting abilities by taking on the action-adventure genre in True Lies (1994). She portrayed a suburban housewife unaware that her husband (Arnold Schwarzenegger) is a spy, a performance that garnered her a second Golden Globe victory.
She featured as Megan Turner in the 1989 film Blue Steel and went on to win the Festival du Film Policier de Cognac Special Mention Award for acting performance as also the Mystfest Film Festival Award for Best Actress. From 1989 to 1992, she played Hannah Miller in the sitcom series Anything But Love starring opposite comedian Richard Lewis. She received the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress - Television Series Musical or Comedy in 1989.
Her films of the 90s include Queens Logic (1991), My Girl (1991), Forever Young (1992), My Girl 2 (1994), Mother’s Boys (1994), Homegrown (1998), and Virus (1999). In 1992, she was a jury member at the Cannes Film Festival. Curtis returned to her horror roots by starring in the sequels: Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998) and Halloween: Resurrection (2002). Though she gave memorable supporting performances in 2000's Drowning Mona and 2001's Tailor of Panama, her next significant box-office success came with a younger crowd when she starred alongside Lindsay Lohan in the 2003 remake of Freaky Friday.
Curtis' screen appearances dwindled after Christmas with the Kranks (2004), and she primarily became known as the spokesperson for Activia yogurt for several years. She reprised her stint with Disney in 2008 featuring as Aunt Viv in Beverly Hills Chihuahua, a live-action animated movie. One of the live-action characters apart from her was Piper Perabo. Her other films in the 2000s include Daddy and Them (2000), Christmas with the Kranks (2004), The Kids & I (2005), You Again (2010), and Veronica Mars (2014).
Starting in 2012, Curtis popped up in recurring roles on such popular TV programs as NCIS and New Girl. Fittingly, she made a full-time return to TV in 2015 with Scream Queens, playing the dean of a university terrorized by a serial killer. That year, Curtis also starred in Spare Parts, a drama based on the real-life story of four high school students who enter a robotics competition.
Forty years after her big-screen debut as Laurie Strode in one of horror's classic films, Curtis faced the evil Mike Myers once again in a new Halloween (2018). This time, the actress said, her character has readied herself to take on her longtime nemesis. The film was a big hit and grossed over $253 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film in the franchise. Curtis also appeared as the vice president in the political thriller An Acceptable Loss that year, before joining the star-studded ensemble of the murder-mystery Knives Out in 2019.
Curtis is one of the few celebrity writers to win over both critics and readers. She has enjoyed tremendous success as a children's book author. Her first children's work, When I Was Little: A Four-Year-Old's Memoir of Her Youth, was published in 1993.
Much of her inspiration has come from her two children with actor-filmmaker Christopher Guest. The adoption of their oldest child, Annie, led to her second book, Tell Me Again About The Night I Was Born (1996). Two years later, she co-authored the New York Times best-seller Today I Feel Silly, and Other Moods That Make My Day. Additionally, in 2006, she wrote Is There Really a Human Race? inspired by her adopted son, Tom.
Curtis' later books include My Mommy Hung the Moon: A Love Story (2010), My Brave Year of Firsts (2016), and Me, Myselfie & I: A Cautionary Tale (2018).
