American observers see me primarily as a labour economist, British observers as a critic of the Treasury model and a partisan of incomes policies. I like to describe myself as a Keynesian, who is in favour of the welfare state and cultural economics. But also as an environmentalist who believes that nature is becoming painfully scarce.
One of my minor contributions is in the field of imagery:
income distribution as a paradigm of dwarfs and giants. The idea was quantified by, inter alia, Assar Lindbeck for Sweden. I believe in econometric research (but never did it myself) because the numerical values of parameters define the structure of the economy.
This structure should be the backbone of colligation or storytelling and economists should not refrain from telling stories. Basically, I am an economic journalist, who produces a running comment on economic issues in newspapers and magazines. These articles are published in various collections (not mentioned above because they are in Dutch) with titles like The Surprises of Economics (1984).
My Look, Economics (1978) is a picture book stressing the human and everyday aspects of economic life. Among Economists (1985) asks the question whether we really are a quarrelsome lot and tries to synthesise Karl Popper and Benjamin Ward.
