(The Changing Image of the City describes urban planning a...)
The Changing Image of the City describes urban planning and development from the end of World War II to 1973, when major elements of the design of Nebraska's largest city were in place. Janet Daly Bednarek shows how the approaches to planning shifted during a period that saw Omaha change from a hub of food processing and transportation to a postindustrial center dominated by insurance and by educational, medical, and other services. Finally, she surveys recent developments such as the Central Park Mall and the Old Market area in light of earlier plans and their implementation. In considering the changes that have occurred in Omaha, this book reveals much about the growth of professional urban planning in America.

(Across the country, Americans take for granted the conven...)
Across the country, Americans take for granted the convenience of air flight from one city to another. In this unique history of the places travelers in cities across America call the airport, Janet R. Daly Bednarek traces the evolving relationship between cities and their airports during the crucial formative years of 1918-1947. She highlights the early history of experimentation and innovation in the development of municipal airports and identifies the factors - including pressure from the United States Post Office and the military, neither of which had the independent resources to develop a network of terminals - that made American cities responsible for their own air access.

On December 17, 1903, Orville and Wilbur Wright soared into history during a twelve-second flight on a secluded North Carolina beach. Commemorating the 100th anniversary of the first flight, these essays chart the central role that aviation played in twentieth-century history and capture the spirit of innovation and adventure that has characterized the history of flight. The contributors, all leading aerospace historians, consider four broad themes relating to the development of flight technology: innovation and the technology of flight, civil aeronautics and government policy, aerial warfare, and aviation in the American imagination.

General aviation encompasses all the ways aircraft are used beyond commercial and military flying: private flights, barnstormers, cropdusters, and so on. Authors Janet and Michael Bednarek have taken on the formidable task of discussing the hundred-year history of this broad and diverse field by focusing on the most important figures and organizations in general aviation and the major producers of general aviation aircraft and engines. This history examines the many airplanes used in general aviation, from early Wright and Curtiss aircraft to the Piper Cub and the Lear Jet.

In the mid-1990s, several individuals in the Office of the Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force began working on biographical sketches of the former chief master sergeants of the Air Force. Based primarily on published materials, these sketches traced the careers of each of the men who had served in the top enlisted post in the United States Air Force.

Janet Rose Daly Bednarek was born on October 14, 1959, in Omaha, Nebraska, United States. She is the daughter of John L. and Corinne J. Daly.
Janet Bednarek began her studies at Creighton University where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree summa cum laude in May 1981 and a Master of Arts degree in May 1983. In April 1987 she obtained a Doctor of Philosophy degree at the University of Pittsburgh.
Janet Bednarek is a professor of history at the University of Dayton. Before coming to the university, she had worked as a historian within the Air Force History and Museums Program from 1989 till 1992. Then he joined the University of Dayton as an assistant professor becoming an associate professor in 1998 and later a professor of history. In 1999 she also became the department chair but then left her position. Bednarek works on the history of airports in the United States, examining them as pieces of the urban transportation infrastructure and also looks at the relationship between airports and city planning. She teaches courses in both urban and aviation history.
Bednarek is also actively engaged in writing and contributing to writings on aviation and urban history. Her book, The Changing Image of the City: Planning for Downtown Omaha, 1945-1973, doesn't change the minds of those who believe midwesterners are backward, but it shows that being a little behind the times is not all bad. It is a history of city planning in post World War II Omaha placed in a larger context.
In Airports, Cities, and the Jet Age: US Airports Since 1945, the author presents such important themes as the introduction of new technologies, jet airliners, in particular, the shift from strict regulation of air commerce to a more market-oriented regime of deregulation, the phenomenal growth of air passenger traffic, the use of airports to promote local economic development, placing them within the long history of the inter-urban competition, and broad security concerns that raised multiple constitutional issues. The book, Dreams of Flight: General Aviation in the United States, provides readers with a sense of the scope and richness of the history of general aviation in the United States.
In Dreams of Flight: General Aviation in the United States, drawing on several brief case studies, Bednarek looks at the social aspects of airports and analyzes how urban development resulted in a variety of airport arrangements. Little published work was available on this topic. Thanks to Bednarek's insightful and thorough treatment and a broad view of the subject, those interested in the patterns of American air travel have a new understanding and those concerned with urban development recognize an additional dimension. Lost Omaha is her most recent book which is on the history of Omaha following World War II and the major redevelopments.
