Jay Gould was born on May 27, 1836 in the town of Roxbury, Delaware County, New York, USA, in the family of small farmer John Barra Gould and Mary Mor Gould. His father was a descendant of English, and his mother was a Scottish colonist. Grandfather Gould Alexander Mor was an entrepreneur, and great-grandfather John Mohr was a Scottish immigrant who founded the city of Morsville in the United States. Gould's father was a small farmer who kept about twenty cows. Jason's duties were to drive the cows to the pasture and help in their milking. Life on the farm quickly bored him and Gould asked his father to send him to school. His father objected for a long time, but still let his son go to school.
