Taught school, Milton, Massachusetts, Greenland, N.H., 1762-1766. Ordained to ministry Congregational Church, 1766. Pastor, Dover, N.H., 1766-1786, Federal Street Church, Boston, 1787-1798.

Chaplain to American troops, Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1775. Engaged in writing history of N.H., 1767. A founder Antiquarian Society, Boston, 1791, became Massachusetts History Society, 1794, secretary until 1798.
