Robinson, John W. was born on January 6, 1866 in Moulton, Iowa, United States. Son of Thomas J. and Julia (Swartz) Robinson.

Education

Graduate Harlan (Iowa) High School, 1884. Graduate Garrett Biblical Institute, Evanston, Illinois, 1892, Bachelor of Divinity, 1897, Doctor of Divinity, 1912.

Career

Entered Mechanical Engineering ministry, Des Moines Conference, 1890. Transferred as missionary te N. India Conference, 1892. First stationed at Lucknow as pastor English-speaking work, continuing there twenty years, successively as agent Methodist Public House, in the vernacular city and school work, and superintendent Oudh district.

Also for 8 years editor Kaukab-i-Hind, vernacular official organ of the mission. Secretary Executive Board Methodist Episcopal Church in Southern Asia, 1904-1912. Eleeted missionary bishop Methodist Episcopal Church for Southern Asia (including Beluchistan, India, Burma, Malaysia, Netherlands Indies, and P.I.), May 24, 1912.

Elected bishop Methodist Episcopal Church, 1920. Retired, 1936. Editor Indian Witness, 1937-1938. In 1939 reappointed to episcopal work, and placed in charge of the Lucknow Area of the recently united Methodist Church, resigned, 1942.

Elected agent Methodist Public House, Lucknow, 1941. Retired, 1942; superintendent of Delhi District of Methodist Church, 1945. Compiled Spiritual Songs, Indian Hymnal, Git hi Kitab.
