John Augustus Nyden


John Augustus Nyden, Swedish architect. Member American International Assurance.


Nyden, John Augustus was born on March 25, 1878 in Sweden. Son of Carl Gustaf Johansson and Marie Christina (Humble) Nyden.


Came to the United States, 1895. Student Valparaiso U., with George A. Fuller of New York City, and at The Art Institute of Chicago Chicago until 1901. Passed examination University of Illinois for practice of architecture, 1904.

Made 4 trips to Europe to study architecture.


Began practice in Chicago, 1907, now president John A. Nyden Company. Principal works: Admiral Hotel, Commonwealth Hotel. Fairfax Hotel, Builders and Merchants Bank Building, Bethany Old People’s Home (Chicago).

Minnehaha Academy (Minneapolis). John Morton Memorial Building (Philadelphia). New Stadium for State of Illinois (Springfield).

Etc.; state architect of Illinois, 1926-1927. President Admiral Hotel Company Commissioned major Question Manager Corps, United States of America, May 23, 1918. Lieutenant colonel Reserve, July 12, 1923.

Certificate of capacity for colonel, June 29, 1926. Served in supervising construction General and Debarkation hospitals in the United States and as liaison officer between Construction Division and Surgical General’s office, Washington, District of Columbia.
