Pemberton, John Clifford was born on August 10, 1814 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. Son of John and Rebecca (Clifford) Pemberton.

Graduated from the United States Military Academy, 1837.

Career

Served as Second lieutenant artillery in Seminole War, 1837-1839. Commissioned First lieutenant, 1842. Brevetted captain, 1846, major, 1847, for services in Mexican War.

Commissioned captain, 1850. Served in operations against Mormons in Utah, 1858. Commissioned lieutenant colonel Confederate Army, 1861, then colonel, brigadier general, 1861, major general and Lieutenant general, 1862.

Surrendered to Grant at Vicksburg. Somewhat suspect throughout South because of Northern birth.
