American mining engineer. In 1893 he became associated with Barnato Brothers and Cecil Rhodes in South Africa. As one of the leaders of the Rand faction, he was arrested and condemned to death after the Jameson raid in January 1896, but the sentence was commuted and he was later released on payment of a $125,000 fine. His name is definitely linked with the development of the deep levels of the Rand mines.


In 1876 took a course at the Royal School of Mines at Freiburg, Germany.In 1880 he made a study of the California gold mines and became manager of the North Star and Empire mines at Grass Valley.
