Winder, John Henry was born on February 21, 1800 in Rewston, Maryland, United States. Son of William H. and Gertrude (Polk) Winder.

Graduated from the United States Military Academy, 1820.

Career

Instructor tactics United States Military Academy, 1823. Assigned to duty in Maine and Florida, 1827-1845. Brevetted major, then lieutenant colonel for conduct in Mexican War.

Commissioned major artillery United States Army, 1860, resigned, 1861. Commissioned brigadier general Confederate Army, 1861, provost marshal and commander Northern prisons, Richmond, Virginia. In charge of military prison, Danville, Virginia, then all prisons in Georgia and Alabama, 1864.

Commissary general all Confederate military prisons east of the Mississippi, 1864-1865.
