From 1912 to 1915 he was an actor and with Chicago Little Theatre from 1915 to 1917. He was a press agent of Stuart Walker in 1922. From 1919 to 1922 he was the editor of Dramatic Mirror in New York. In 1923 he was a dramatic director at Swarthmore Chautauqua. He served as an executive secretary at Richard Boleslavsky’s Laboratory Theatre from 1924 to 1926. From 1927 to 1962 he served as a dance editor and critic at New York Times.
In 1929 he was a director of summer theatre productions in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, and in Locust Valley, New York, in 1933, in New Rochelle, New York, in 1934. From 1930 to 1940 he was a member of faculty at New School Social Research in New York City, and at the Bennington College School of Dance, from 1934 to 1938. From 1930 to 1945 he was a lecturer on dance history and criticism. From 1965 to 1971 he was a lecturer dance at thw University of California at Los Angeles.
On August 17, 1918 John Joseph Martin married Hettie Louise Mick.
