Bellamy, Joseph was born on February 20, 1719 in Cheshire, Connecticut, United States. Son of Matthew and Sarah (Wood) Bellamy.

Education

Graduated from Yale, 1735. Studied theology with Jonathan Edwards, 1735-1737.

Career

Pastor, Congregational Church, Bethlehem, Connecticut, 1738-1790. A powerful advocate in sermons of New Light theology of Great Awakening, became well-known as preacher in Southern New England, 1740’s, 50’s. Published works dealing with sin and theory of atonement, aroused controversy in Congregational ministry.

Author: True Religion Delineated, 1750. The Wisdom of God in the Permission of Sin, 1758.
