Joseph Szigeti, Hungarian violinist. Decorated commander French Legion of Honor; officer Hungarian Order of Merit; commander Belgian Order of Leopold. Member Royal Academy Music London (honorary).


Szigeti, Joseph was born on September 5, 1892 in Budapest, Hungary. Son of Adolph and Dora (Faktor) Szigeti.


Pupil of Jeno Hubay; honorary Doctor of Music, Acadia U.


1 daughter, Mistress Irene Magaloff. Debut at Royal Academy, Budapest, at age of 11. Then played in Berlin and Dresden.

Lived in England 5 years giving concerts and appeared with Melba and others. Toured Europe; teacher violin master classes Geneva (Switzerland) Conservatory, 1917-1924. Debut in the United States as soloist with Philadelphia Orchestra, 1925.

Annual concerts in the United States, 1926-1973. Made 2 world tours, giving 200 concerts. Appearances with major orchs. throughout United States.

Frequent nationwide broadcasts. Has also made recordings of an extensive list of standard works by Mercury Recording Corporation, Columbia Records, and Vanguard Recording Corporation. Concert tour, Japan, 1953, S.A., 1954.

Series 20th Century Master Sonatas in New York City, Chicago, San Francisco, Philadelphia, others, 1956-1957.
