Rammelkamp graduated from Jacksonville High School. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1939 from Illinois College and his Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from Harvard University.
Rammelkamp also received a Doctor of Letters from Illinois College in 1979.
Julian Rammelkamp served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps from 1941 to 1945, rising to the rank of sergeant. During the 1950s Rammelkamp was a history teacher at Jacksonville High School and a reporter for the Jacksonville Journal-Courier. He joined the faculty at Albion College, as a member of the history department in 1954. He chaired this department from 1975 to 1983 and was the college's pre-law adviser through most of his tenure. He retired in 1984. His first and only book was Pulitzer’s Post-Dispatch, 1878-1883 (1966). Julian also contributed articles to various history journals.
Julian Rammelkamp was a member of the American Historical Association, Organization of American Historians, and the Missouri Historical Society.
Julian Rammelkamp married Mabel Alvera Tippitt on February 25, 1942. Their marriage produced three children - David Addison, Julian Charles and Robert Allan.
