Kamala Visweswaran is an American Anthropology educator, historian and writer.


Mrs. Visweswaran was born on April 14, 1962, in Chicago, Illinois, United States. She is a daughter of G., a professor of social work, and Carol Ruth, a social worker whose maiden name was Pierce, Visweswaran.


In 1984 Kamala Visweswaran received her Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology with highest honors from University of California, Berkeley. She obtained her Master of Arts in Anthropology from Stanford University in 1987. She graduated from Stanford University with Doctor of Philosophy in Anthropology in 1990.


In 1984 Mrs. Visweswaran was appointed research assistant at California Council for Humanities, San Francisco. In 1985 she resumed her office as a research assistant at Groundwork Institute, Berkeley. Mrs. Visweswaran was an acting assistant professor of the department of anthropology at Stanford University between 1989 and 1990.

Since 1990 Kamala Visweswaran held the position of an assistant professor at New School for Social Research, New York City. She was a consultant at Paragram Productions, New York City, since 1993. Concurrently she acted as a lecturer, conference presenter, panel discussant in the field. Between 1992 and 1994 Mrs. Visweswaran worked as an assistant professor of research project of Indian Council on Social Science. In 1995 she joined the staff of the University of Texas at Austin, serving as an assistant professor of anthropology.
