Graduated from Protestant Episcopal Schools: St. Margaret's School in Essex County ( 1961 ) and St. Mary's Jr. College in Raleigh, N.C. ( 1963 ). Associate of Arts, Bachelors, and Masters. Studied at Old Dominion University, The College of William and Mary, and Edinburgh University. Was associated with Scottish Church Historian Dr.Ian B. Cowan and Dr..Marinelle Ash. Studied under Scottish historian/ author Nigel Tranter and Cambridge historian Sir Steven Runciman of Elsheshields, Dumfriesshire, Scotland.

Mrs. Pollard is from an old Virginian family and related to those of the Madisons, Warings, Bagbys, Lewises, Mears, and others. She was first married to the grandson of Governor John Garland Pollard ( 1929-33) who was a distant cousin. Her father's maternal uncle, Attorney General John Richard Saunders, "John R" , served with Pollard both in various capacities in the Commonwealth of Virginia. capacities. Both Pollard and Saunders were born in King and Queen County, Virginia. Her mother was the daughter of Dr. George Bentley Byrd ( Keller, Virginia ) and Katharine Bell Byrd ( grand daughter of the attorney and alcalde for Stephen F. Austin of Texas whose home was the first state capital of Texas at Bell's Landing on the Brazos River ). Her grandmother's brother, Edward Bell, was the covert intelligence liaison for President Woodrow Wilson during world War 1 in London. Her other brother William Bell headed the New England Electric Company. Her grandmother's maternal aunt founded Wilson College in Pennsylvania and she is directly related to the border Scottish American Bell family, one of whom was the founder of National Geographic.
