Kathryn Marguerite Talalay was born on October 29, 1949 in New Haven, Connecticut, United States; a daughter of Anselm and Marjorie Ruth (Freedman) Talalay.
Kathryn Marguerite Talalay attended Bennington College in 1967-1969.
She then received her Bachelor of Arts in Classics from New York University in 1971.
She later earned from Case Western Reserve University her Master of Arts in Musicology and her Master of Library Science in 1975.

Kathryn Marguerite Talalay was assistant reference librarian and research librarian at Indiana University School of Music from 1975 to 1990. She then became an assistant archivist and researcher at the American Academy of Arts and Letters in New York City during 1990-1996.
Since 1996, Talalay has been a project editor at W.W. Norton and Co. in New York City.
She also authored "Composition in Black and White: The Life of Philippa Schuyler" and co-authored "Scores by Women Composers" and "Encyclopedia of African-American Culture and History".
Kathryn Marguerite Talalay has been a member of Music Library Association, American Musicological Society, and Center for Black Music Research.
Kathryn Marguerite Talalay married Frank James Ponzio III, a jazz pianist and composer, on September 16, 1989.
