In 1980 Kimmika received Bachelor of Arts in Journalism at Howard University. In 1996 she earned Master of Fine Arts in Playwriting at Temple University, and then Master of Arts in Anthropology at Temple University in 2001.
In 1984 - 1986 Kimmika worked as a reporter and columnist in Philadelphia Tribune. Then she served as an instructor in Pennsylvania Prison Society in 1985 - 1989, and a scriptwriter in Bob Lott Productions in 1986 - 1989. After that she was an arts host and producer in WXPN-FM in 1989 - 1990. Since 1990 she works as an instructor in Village Arts Center and an outreach instructor and actress in Walnut Street Theatre.
On July 11, 1992 Kimmika married Darrell V. Witherspoon, with whom he has two children, Essence and Tenasha.
