Barbalas was born on July 9, 1958 in Forest Hills, New York, United States; the daughter of Benjamin K. and Laura (Kwan) Cheng.
Barbalas received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Cornell University in 1979. Two years later she was given a Master of Arts degree from Columbia University.
Barbalas began her career as a member of technical staff at American Telephone & Telegraph Company Bell Laboratories in 1982. Three years later she took a position of a lecturer at Lanzhou University. Also she served as a consultant of management technologies in China. Since 1991 Lorina has been an administrator at Friends of China Foundation.
Barbalas is a member of American Chemical Society.
On October 10, 1981 Lorina Barbalas married Michael Peter Barbalas.
