Served eight years in the Royal Engineers, three years in England, five in British Columbia. Served in New Westminster (British Columbia) and Victoria (British Columbia) Rifle Volunteers with the rank of Ensign, 1864-1874. Joined the Active Militia of Canada on formation in British Columbia, 1874, and served with the respective ranks of Ensign, Lieutenant, Captain, Major, and Lieutenant-Colonel until retirement, 1888.
Was awarded the Volunteer Decoration for long service as an officer in the Colonial Forces.
