Mary Ellen Tressel Ellsworth was born on August 13, 1940, in Chicago, Illinois, United States. She is the daughter of Harry S. and Marguerite (King) Tressel.
Mary Ellen Ellsworth began her studies at Smith College where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in American studies in 1962. The next year she obtained a Master of Arts degree in literature at Columbia University. Later on, in 1981, she got a Doctor of Philosophy degree in literature also at Columbia University.
Mary Ellen Ellsworth, after receiving her master's degree in 1963, began her career at Rye Country Day School as a teacher of English and Mathematics, the position she left in 1965. During the 1960s, she also taught English and Mathematics at Grace Church School and served as an English lecturer at Queensborough Community College and Queens College. Later, in the 1970s she was a lecturer in English at Tunxis Community College.
In 1981-1982, she worked as a lecturer in English at Quinebaug Valley Community College. Then she joined Eastern Connecticut State University, holding the same position, and taught there the poetry of women, New England literature, drama, fiction, general literature, expository writing, composition, and others till 1990. In 1991, she came back to Quinebaug Valley Community College where she worked till 1995 as a lecturer. During this time, she also worked as a lecturer at Three Rivers Community College in 1992-1993 and at the University of Saint Joseph in 1992, and as a visiting faculty fellow at Yale University in 1993-1995.
During her time as a lecturer at Three Rivers Community College from 1995 till 1997, she also held the position of a lecturer at the University of Hartford and that of an assistant professor of English at Eastern Connecticut State University. Then in 1997 she joined Connecticut College and was a visiting assistant professor there till 2009.
In addition to her teaching career, Mary Ellen Ellsworth authored Gertrude Chandler Warner and The Boxcar Children, which chronicles Warner's early years as an elementary school teacher in her hometown of Putnam, her work in children's publishing, and the writing of the much-loved adventures, and A History of the Connecticut Academy of Arts and Sciences 1799-1999.
