Matt Damon (Matthew PaigeDamon) Edit Profile
He attended Cambridge Alternative School (now Graham & Parks) and then Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, where he was a disciplined student but had a "terrifying" first two years due to his short height at the time. As a lonely adolescent, Damon has described feeling "such pain in wanting to belong somewhere and not belonging.Damon performed as an actor in several high school theater productions.
Damon attended Harvard University from 1988 to 1992 but did not graduate. While at Harvard, he studied English and lived in Lowell House. He took part in student theater, appearing in plays such as Burn This in Winthrop House and A... My Name is Alice (in one of the three male roles usually performed by women). Damon dropped out of the university to pursue his acting career in Los Angeles because he mistakenly expected Geronimo: An American Legend to become a big success.
He got neither a nomination nor much thanks for his furtive, underclassed guy on the rise—and perhaps, in hindsight, the film could have given more scope to his appetite for daring and impersonation. Still, it was a great performance, streets ahead of the unruly-puppy stuff that got recognized in the altogether deplorable Good Will Hunting (97, Gus Van Sant), for which Damon the actor was nominated, and Damon and his pal Ben Affleck walked off with the original screenplay Oscar—they should have been given an Oscar à la Frisbee.
What’s most interesting about Damon is the very lack of Affleckian good looks, the feel of a squashed and rebuilt face, the uneasiness. Ripley is the best forecast of his future and some promise of an intelligent sourness not seen on screens since the days of Holden and Mitchum.
He dropped out of Harvard to pursue acting, and he built bis career with The Good Mother (88, Leonard Nimoy); Mystic Pizza (88, Donald Petrie); Rising Son (90, John David Coles); School Ties (92, Robert Mandel); Geronimo: An American Legend (93, Walter Hill); The Good Old Boys (95, Tommy Lee Jones); very good as a jitterv soldier in Courage Under Fire (96, Edward Zwick); carrying the load in The Rainmaker (97, Francis Coppola); Chasing Amy (97, Kevin Smith); Saving Private Ryan (98, Steven Spielberg); Rounders (98, (olm Dahl); Dogma (99, Smith); a voice in Titan A.E. (00. Don Bluth and Garv Goldman).
A few years later one has to ask where he’s going. He could make little out of The Legend of Bagger Vance (00, Robert Redford) or All the Pretty Horses (00, Billv Bob Thornton). He had a bit part as himself in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (01, Smith); The Third Wheel (01, Jordan Brady) seemed like a lark. The TV series Project Greenlight (01) seemed more personal and far more rewarding than being lost in the crowd of Ocean's Eleven (01, Steven Soderbergh) or The Bourne Identity (02, Doug Liman).
