Career

Became midshipman United States Navy, 1825, promoted Lieutenant, 1836. On surveying duty in harbors of S.E. United States. Contributed many articles on United States Navy to newspapers and periodicals, 1838-1842.

Superintendent depot of charts and instruments Navy Department, 1842-1855, 58-61, developed wind and current charts. Promoted commander, 1858. Served as commander Confederate States Navy, 1861-1865.

Special agent of Confederacy in England. Imperial commissioner of immigration to emperor of Mexico, 1865-1866. Lived in England, 1866-1868.

Professor meteorology Virginia Military Institute, Lexington, 1868. Author: Wind and Current Chart of the North Atlantic, 1847. Abstract Log for the Use of American Navigators, 1848.
