(Whitman began as a commonplace versifier and hack journal...)
Whitman began as a commonplace versifier and hack journalist and became a poet of universal significance. His work reflects a shift from inexperienced optimism to experienced idealism. Whitman's metamorphosis was brought about not by some secret bizarre experience, but by a successful struggle with the turmoil and doubt which afflicted America and the American Dream prior to and during the Civil War.
