Maurice received Bachelor of Arts at Lincoln Memorial University in 1945, then Master of Arts at New York University in 1948, and Doctor of Philosophy at University Nebraska in 1950. Later he became D.S.Sc. summa cum laude at New School Social Research in 1953, and Master of Arts (honorary) at Yale University in 1976.
During his career he taught at the University of Houston, the Graduate Faculty of the New School for Social Research, the University of North Carolina, the University of California at Santa Cruz, and Yale University. He was a visiting professor at the Pennsylvania State University and University of California, Berkeley.
A captivating speaker, Natanson delivered the inaugural Alfred Schutz Memorial Lecture, "Alfred Schutz: Philosopher and Social Scientist" (1995) and the Aron Gurwitsch Memorial Lecture "Illusion and Irreality" (1983) at the annual meetings of the Society for Phenomenology & the Human Sciences in 1995.

On January 21, 1949, Maurice married Lois Janet Lichenstein, and they had three children: Charles, Nicholas, and Kathy.
