Crowell was born on November 16, 1949 in Minneapolis, United States; the son of Harold Earl Crowell and Elizabeth Anne (Kripps) Crowell.
Crowell studied at San Mateo High School from 1963 to 1966. Then in 1973, he received a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry, math and physics from the University of California. Nine years later Michael earned his Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering from California State University.
Crowell began his career as a chemist at Martin Metals Inc. in 1977 and held it for two years. In 1978, he took the same position at Platinum Group Process Industries, where he worked until 1979. In 2005, Michael was appointed a draftsman at Paoli Engineering and Surveying. Since 2010 he has been a scientist.
Crowell is a member of American Institute of Electrical Engineers, American Chemical Society, American Academy of Sciences, California Urchin Producers Association, L-5 Society, Organization for Advancement of Space Industrialization and Settlement, Fort Bragg Urchin Drivers Association and The Planetary Society.
On February 19, 1987 Michael Crowell married Constance Wilson Church.
