Michael Francis Brenson was born on December 28, 1942 in New York City; the son of Theodore Brenson and Vera (Blumenthal) Brenson.
Michael Brenson received his Bachelor of Arts in 1964 at Rutgers University. Four years later he got a Master of Arts degree in creative writing from Johns Hopkins University. Michael was given a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Art History in 1974 from the same University.
Since childhood, Michael Brenson has been fond of abstract expressionism and European and American modernism, art history in general, and discussions of the relation of the artist and his work to society. While studying at Johns Hopkins University, Michael Brenson was passionate about sculpture. He wrote a doctoral dissertation on the Swiss sculptor-painter Alberto Giacometti.
Shortly after completing the doctoral work, he moved to Paris where he became an art critic. He wrote for the International Herald Tribune, Art in America, and the New York Times. On leaving the New York Times, Mr. Brenson has continued writing art criticism. He gave lectures at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Denver Art Museum, the Getty Research Institute, the Museum of Modern Art in New York City and in San Francisco, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washinton, D.C., and many others. He also was a curator of five exhibitions.
Brenson is the author of such books as Visionaries and Outcasts: The NEA, Congress, and the Place of the Visual Arts in America, Culture in Action: A Public Art Program of Sculpture Chicago, and Dream Singers, Story Tellers: An African-American Presence.
Michael Brenson also was on the editorial board of Art Journal from 1993 to 1999 and on the board of Creative Time from 1999 to 2005.
He is currently a faculty member in sculpture at Bard College's Center for Curatorial Studies and Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts. He is also a visiting senior critic at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Design.
