Michael H. Cardozo graduated from Phillips Academy, Andover, Massachusetts in 1928. He also received a B.A. from Dartmouth College in 1932. In 1935 he gained a Bachelor of Laws from Yale University.
Michael began work at the law firm of Parker & Duryee in New York, United States, in 1935-1938. Then he was an attorney temporary national economics committee, life insurance investigation at Securities and Exchange Commission in 1938-1940. Then he worked as an attorney at Unites states department of Justice in 1940-1942, then worked with, United States Lend-Lease and Foreign Economics Administration. in 1942-1945, with Lend-Lease representative in Turkey between 1943 and 1944, with Office of Legal Adviser, Department State in 1945-1952. Cardozo was an assistant legal adviser for economics affairs at the Office of Legal Adviser, Department State in 1950-1952. Cardozo later joined the faculty of Cornell University, serving at the school from 1952 until 1963. From 1958 until 1959 he was a Fulbright and Guggenheim fellow in Belgium; during his career he also founded a Fulbright scholar alumni association and served as its president for a time. In 1963, Cardozo began ten years as executive director of the Association of American Law Schools. In 1973 he took up private practice. Cardozo also served as a visiting law professor at schools such as the University of Pennsylvania and Northwestern University. He was also a consultant to groups such as the U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives, and the Naval War College. Cardozo also dabbled in writing, founding the Preview law journal, working on the editorial board and later editing the Journal of Supreme Court History, and serving The Practical Lawyer magazine on its board of editors. He also authored several books, including "Exchange of Patent Rights and Technical Information under Mutual Aid Programs", "Diplomats in International Cooperation: Stepchildren of the Foreign Service", and the "History of the Association of American Law Schools" (1950-1963).
Cardozo was president of Gomez Foundation for Mill House between 1983 and 1992. He was a member of American Bar Association, Federal Bar Association, District of Columbia Bar Association, Washington Foreign Law Society (president in 1976), American Law Institute, American Society International Law (secretary in 1978-1994), Fulbright Alumni Association (president in 1982).
Michael Cardozo married Alice Corneille on July 31, 1937. The had 3 children: Michael Hart V., Julia Aline Cardozo, Alice Rebecca. They also had five grandchildren.
