Alekseev, Mikhail was born in 1918 in Monastyrskoe, Saratov Oblast’. Son of a peasant.


Graduated from the High Literary Courses of the Writers’ Union, 1957.


His first novel, Soldaty, 1951-1953, was marked by its humanity and frankness. Editor-inchief of the literary journal Moskva from 1968. At a meeting between M. Gorbachev and top editors and artists in 1987, he complained loudly about the Soviet media’s treatment of Soviet history.

Considered one of the most hopeful editors to emerge out of Gorbachev’s glasnost.

Every person has rights to express his or her opinion, but the opinion could be expressed if it was in accordance with the general interests of Soviet society.
