Lecturer, Leningrad State University, Academy of Arts and Moscow State University. Then head, from 1953 professor Oriental Department, Faculty of History, Moscow State University;1941-1944 served in Soviet Army.
From 1946 member, from 1953 (after death of predecessor A.Yu.Yakubovskiy) head, Tadzh Archeological Expedition. Took special interest in history of ancient Bactria, where he excavated several graves and towns. Helped to decipher Parthian archives discovered in Nisa, the ancient capital of Parthiat/^f?/: Ocherk istorii Drevnego Irana (An Outline History of Ancient Persia) (1961), et cetera
