Myra Cohn Livingston was born on August 17, 1926 in Omaha, in rhe family of Mayer L. and Gertrude (Marks) Cohn.
Myra was educated at Sarah Lawrence College until 1948.
Livingston was one of the foremost American children’s authors of the latter twentieth-century. She wrote scores of books and compiled about forty anthologies. Trained as a French horn player, she opted to write book reviews in 1948 for newspapers such as the Los Angeles Daily News and the Los Angelas Mirror. In 1950 she began working as a personal secretary for entertainer Dinah Shore; she also held a similar post with musician Jascha Heifetz, and was working on a biography of the violinist before her death. In 1958 she began a series of jobs as an instructor at such institutions as the Dallas Public Library and Dallas Public School System and the University of California-Los Angeles. From 1966 until 1984, she was poet-in-residence at the Beverly Hills United School District. Beginning in 1975, she was a poetry consultant to various publishers. She also taught classes for the International Reading Association, the National Council of Teachers of English, and other organizations.

On April 14, 1952 Myra married Richard Roland Livingston, who deceased in 1990. They had three children: Joshua, Jonas Cohn, and Jennie Marks.
