Nicholas Harkins Clulee was born on February 13, 1945, in Oak Park, Cook Country, Illinois, United States. He is a son of Charles Rudge Clulee and Mary Clulee.
In 1966 Nicholas Harkins Clulee received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Hobart College. In 1968 he obtained a Master of Arts degree from the University of Chicago, and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1973.
From 1971 to 1985 Nicholas Harkins Clulee was an instructor, then associate professor at Frostburg State University, was appointed a professor of history in 1985, and a chair of department in 1997. In 1991 he became a director of Modem Humanities Institute.
