Norma H. McPhee was born on June 24, 1928, in Dunkirk, New York, United States. She is a daughter of Walter Bruce Howatt, a farmer, and Hattie Calista Howatt (maiden name Holcomb), a teacher and homemaker.
Norma H. McPhee received a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from the State University of New York at Fredonia in 1950.
Then, she also attended Immaculata College (currently Immaculata University) in Pennsylvania.
Although always interested in writing as a career, Norma H. McPhee started her professional path in 1950 as a music educator in high schools and colleges. She has taught and conducted multiple choirs in Lake Shore Control School District, Oxford, New Britain as well as in various churches.
From 1963 to 1985, McPhee served as a chapel musician in the United States Air Force Chaplaincy. It was then when she finally pursued writing and began selling her first articles. She has also written and helped direct plays and programs which later were collected into her first book, ‘Programs for Church Year’, published by Judson Press in 1971. The debut volume was followed by other programs and educational guides.
In 1978, McPhee shifted to the field of special education and music therapy. With the birth of her first grandson, born with cerebral palsy and profoundly affected, she took a pen name Nan Holcomb and pursued her writing career creating books for these very special children.
In the beginning, it was difficult to find publishers in this field, so in 1988, Norma H. McPhee founded Jason and Nordic Publishers and since then has encouraged other ‘experts’ to write upbeat children’s books for children with disabilities as well as their families and friends.
In addition to writing, McPhee has been a volunteer in music education, serving in the therapy staff of The Children's Center, Montgomery, Alabama, and of the Old Forge School District, Middletown, Pennsylvania.
