Otis Love Guernsey was born on August 9, 1918 in New York City. He was the son of Otis L. and Margaret (Henderson) Guernsey.
Otis Guernsey was a student at Taft School. In 1940 he received a Bachelor of Arts from Yale University.
Otis Guernsey began his career at the New York Herald Tribune, where he worked from 1941 to 1960 as a drama and film critic. During his time there, he edited 36 volumes of the Best Plays series. He also edited reference books and wrote a portion of the screenplay for Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest. Other pieces he edited include The Burns Mantle Yearbook of the Theater and Playwrights, Lyricists, and Composers on Theatre.
