Robbins was born on February 21, 1933 in Baltimore, United States; the daughter of Roland Franklin Forlifer and Victoria Marie (Buellis) Forlifer.
Robbins received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Bucknell University in 1953. Two years later she was given a Master of Science degree from Columbia University.
Robbins began her career as a reporter at Richmond Times-Dispatch in 1955. A year later she took the same position at Evening Sun and at News Leader in 1957, where she worked until 1962.
Also in 1966 Patricia became a teacher of journalism at Strayer Junior College. She served as a director of information at George Mason College from 1966 to 1969. Then in 1970, Robbins was appointed an editor and writer for National Geography Society. Since 1985 she has been an editor of National Geography World Magazine.
Robbins is a member of Aurora-Highlands Civic Association and Society of Professional Journalists.
On June 23, 1956 Patricia Robbins married Philip Robbins. They have three children.
