Assistant professor engineering United States Military Academy, 1840-1842. Chief engineer of Louisiana, 1845. Lieutenant colonel 14th Infantry, United States Army, participated in all important battles of Mexican War.

Brevetted colonel, 1848. Member Louisiana Constitutional Convention, 1852. Governor Louisiana, 1852.

Commissioned brigadier general Confederate Army, 1861. Commanded Department of Texas, in charge of defenses of Galveston. Commanded sub-district of North Louisiana.

Engineer State of Louisiana, 1873. Commissioner and civil engineer of Mississippi levees.
