Merchant with William Cabot, Boston, 1793-1810. Went to England for health, 1810, studied textile mills. Formed Boston Manufacturing Company which bought land at Waltham, Massachusetts, designed from memory or invented machines for cotton factory (1st factory in world to unite all processes of cloth under one roof).
Lobbied for tariff of 1816 which protected his cloth mill.
Lowell (Massachusetts) named after him.
Married Hannah Jackson, October 31, 1798, 4 children including John.
