He became lieutenant governor of Quebec shortly before his death, Mar. 28, 1929, in Quebec. Gouin was knighted in 1908. He was a singularly devoted public official. Politically he was a Liberal, and to the general excellence of his administration may be attributed, in part, the long tenure of power his party enjoyed in Quebec from 1897 to 1936.
