1903 made first expedition to Pamirs. 1904 reached unexplored territory in middle reaches of Muksu River. 1905 explored Alay mountain range and valley.
From 1922 professor and head, Chair of Physical Geography, Centr Asian University. 1922 led expedition to Muyun-Kun desert. 1926 led expedition of Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences, which discovered Academy of Sciences Range in 1928.
Subsequently explored the foothills of the Tyan’Shan'. Determined the exact location of the Kir range. Described Lake Karakul’ and compiled a catalog of the Centr Asian glaciers.
