Straub was born on February 13, 1958 in Rockville, New York, United States; the son of Richard Joseph Straub and Anne Moran (Gibbons) Straub.
Straub received a Bachelor of Science degree from Stockton State College (nowadays Stockton University) in 1980. Five years later he earned his Master of Science degree and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1990 from the University of Delaware.
Straub began his career as a laboratory assistant manager at Atlantic Community College in 1980 and held it for two years. In 1989, he took a position of a postdoctoral research associate of biology at Washington University. Since 1994 Peter has been an assistant professor of biology at Richard Stockton College of New Jersey (nowadays Stockton University).
Straub was a member of Botanical Society of America.
On January 3, 1983 Peter Straub married Paula Eileen Grey. They have 2 children.
