Chase, Philander was born on December 14, 1775 in Cornish, New Hampshire, United States. Son of Dudley and Allace (Corbett) Chase.

Career

Ordained deacon Episcopal Church, 1798, priest, 1799. 1st Episcopal bishop of Ohio, 1818-1831. President Cincinnati College, 1821-1822.

Founder Kenyon College, Gambier, O., 1824, 1st president, 1824-1831. Became bishop Diocese of Illinois, 1835-1852. Principal founder Jubilee College, Illinois (now site Jubilee State College Park), 1838.

Presiding bishop of Episcopal Church, 1843-1852.
