Porter, Quincy was born on February 7, 1897 in New Haven. Son of Frank Chamberlin and Delia (Lyman) Porter.

Bachelor of Arts, Yale, 1919, Bachelor of Music, 1921, Master of Arts (privatim) 1946. Honorary Doctor Music, U. Rochester, 1944, studied with Horatio Parker, d’Indy and Ernest Bloch. A.F.D. (honorary), University Michigan, 1954.

Teacher, Cleveland Institute Music, 1922-1928, 1931-1932. Professor music Vassar College, 1932-1938. Dean faculty N.E. Conservatory Music, 1938-1942, director, 1942-1946.

Professor music Yale School Music, 1946-1965, professor emeritus, since 1965, Battell professor, 1960-1965, and master Pierson College Yale. Board of directors Composers Recordings, Inc. Guggenheim fellow, 1929-1931.
